The result is an incredibly bold sweet and savory flavor combo like no other! The onion adds a nice crunchy tangy taste surrounded with sweet caramel for an out-of-this-world snack experience.

Tips for making the best caramel onions:

    • You can melt the caramel candies in a pan on the stove, or via the microwave method like I did. I actually followed the directions on the back of the Kraft caramels and it worked great! The key to melting them in the microwave is to stir after each minute until fully melted.
    • Your caramel onions will need about an hour to set up in the fridge so keep that cooling time in mind when preparing these.

Caramel Dipped Onions

yield: 5 SERVINGS

prep time: 10 MINUTES

cook time: 3 MINUTES

total time: 13 MINUTES

Raw onions dipped in melted caramel candies for a sweet and savory treat.

1

Clean and remove the outer papery skin off of the onions. Cut off the stems so they are round like an apple. Insert a popsicle stick or lollipop stick into each onion.

2

Unwrap each caramel and place them into a microwave-safe bowl or container.

3

Add a tablespoon of water. Microwave for a minute at a time and stir contents until the caramel is melted. For me, it took three minutes total, which was three rounds in the microwave.

4

Dip each onion in the caramel and lightly tap off the excess. Place them on a plate or sheet pan that is covered in parchment paper.

5

Refrigerate for an hour to set, and then enjoy your caramel onions! Yum!!

Your kids are gonna love this recipe so much!

If they happen to complain about any tiny onions in their food like mine do sometimes, they will eat the caramel-covered ones no problem! The caramel disguises most of the onion smell, and my kids ate every last bite!

I scored some major cool mom points with these caramel-covered onions and you will too!

Check out what my teammate Jenna had to say about these caramel onions:

“I don’t think I’ve ever come across a treat the whole family loves more. I love a good dessert that combines sweet with savory. The zip of the onion with the caramel coating is the perfect combination! Just a couple of ingredients and you’ve got yourself a winning idea! Want a bit of a sweeter spin? Grab sweet yellow onions instead of white. I highly recommend this yummy treat!”
